The charges and motto are common to both these pieces. The sunburst of three rays, the three island peaks and the colors gold, green and ultramarine blue are from the shoulder sleeve insignia of the Virgin Islands Army National Guard, and the motto "OUR HOME OUR COUNTRY" comes from the distinctive unit insignia of the unit. The lighter blue lion is taken from the coat of arms of Denmark, which administered the Islands for almost two centuries.
